Abrasive Waterjet Cutting

Water Jet Cutting from Mac-Mold Base, Inc is a process that produces 2-dimensional shapes by cutting sheet material using a 60,000 PSI high pressure stream of water, with or without an abrasive.

2009 Mitsubishi Suprema DX 612 - 5.875" x 72.000" x 144.000" Capacity

As of 2008, Mac Mold Base has been utilizing abrasive waterjet cutting technology daily. Our waterjet cutting service is an economical way to cut 2D shapes in a very wide range of materials with no tooling costs. The unique process of CNC waterjet cutting provides reasonably good edge quality without burrs, usually eliminating the need for secondary finishing. Our 2009 Mitsubishi Suprema CNC water jet can cut single or stacked flat materials from as thin as .0625" to as thick as 5.875 inches with tolerances run up to 0.005 inches for the best finish. Taper is limited by Mitsubishi’s ITC (intelligent taper control) which is based on a library of materials and sizes. The process generates no excessive heat so the material edge is unaffected and there is no distortion. The cutting process also yields no poisonous gas or dust when cutting plastics, rubber or Fiberglas.

Parts possible with waterjet cutting include 2D shapes with cuts of almost any complexity. Examples of parts that are often produced include:

  • Aerospace Parts
  • Aluminum Fixtures
  • Armor Plate
  • Artistic Designs
  • Business Signs
  • Defense Parts
  • Enclosures
  • Front Panels
  • Furniture Parts
  • Gaskets
  • Gears
  • Medical Equipment
  • Metal Brackets
  • Mold Plates
  • Motorcycle Parts
  • Plastic Injection Manifolds
  • Robotic Parts
  • Scientific Applications
  • Sheet Metal Parts
  • Tooling Plates

Our table capacity is approximately 5.875" x 72.000" x 144.000"

No custom tooling is normally needed in CNC water jet cutting although we recommend plywood under thin or delicate materials. Cost reduction options include tight nesting, distortion free roughing, reduction of total cut times and expensive secondary finishing due to burrs or material imperfections. Waterjet may not compete with a torch in speed with thicker materials, however it can compensate with a smaller kerf and a more useable drop. Mac-Mold Base Inc. will waterjet cut prototypes or production runs.

About the Machine

Mitsubishi is famous for its excellent history of machine tools such as EDM, laser, mills and accurate and advanced CNC controls. Paired with a 60,000 PSI pump that is easy to maintain, the DX612 is a pleasure to operate and gets the job done. Downtime is limited thanks to the Ebbco garnet removal system and excellent phone support from their main branch in Chicago. Their phone techs are the same people who install and repair these machines so they really know what they are talking about. Learn more at: (MC Machinery)
